MBBS Seats in Bihar under State Quota | UGMAC Counselling 2024

Bihar, the land of Gautam Buddha, Mahavira, Maurya Empire, Gupta Empire, the great ancient Nalanda and Vikramshila University, is the third most populous state in India. With every passing year, the numbers of medical aspirants are also increasing in the state by manifold. Though in recent years, Bihar has seen number of new private medical colleges opening up, seats in government medical colleges have largely remained stagnant. Let us take a look at MBBS Seats in Bihar under State Quota.

Distribution of MBBS Seats in Medical Colleges of Bihar

Apart from few medical colleges like AIIMS, BHU, JIPMER, AMU, etc., seats in almost every government medical college are distributed under two major categories- All India Quota (15%) and State Quota (85%). NEET is the sole exam through which candidates can get admission in various medical colleges of India.

All India Quota: MCC of DGHS conducts online counselling for 15% AIQ seats. Candidates irrespective of their native states are eligible for these seats based of their All India Rank. All 125 seats in AIIMS Patna are available under AIQ.

State Quota: BCECEB conducts UGMAC counselling for 85% state quota medical seats. For claiming seats under this quota, candidate must be permanent resident of Bihar.

Central Nominees: Few government medical colleges also have central pool MBBS seats. Wards of Defence personnel, CAPFs, victims of terrorist activities, COVID Warriors, etc., are eligible for these seats. Various departments of central government nominate eligible candidates for admission under this quota.

Reserved seats under state quota in Bihar

60% seats falling under state quota are reserved for different social groups while remaining 40% seats are unreserved (UR) seats. A candidate should be a permanent resident of Bihar for seeking reservation benefits. Take a look at percentage of seats reserved for different groups.

Scheduled Castes: 16% ————————> (20% as per new amendment

Scheduled Tribes: 1%    ————————> (2% as per new amendment)

Extremely Backward Classes: 18%  ———> (25% as per new amendment)

Backward Classes: 12%     ———————> (18% as per new amendment)

Female Seats: 1/3 of total seats

Bihar State Legislature recently passed Bihar Reservation (Admission in Educational Institutions) Amendment Bill, 2023 – increasing quota for SC, ST and OBC from 50 to 60 percent now. Adding 10% quota for EWS, reservation in Bihar has now reached 75%.

A petition has been filed against the latest amendment in Patna High Court. If this amendment passes the scrutiny of judiciary then the General category candidates will only have 25% medical seats in Bihar to compete for from 2024 onwards. This article will be updated after the release of modified seat matrix from BCECEB.

For female NEET candidates, one-third of total seats under state-quota are reserved in each medical college. Total 402 seats are reserved for female candidatesUR (161), EWS (40), SC (64), ST (4), EBC (72) and BC (48).

It’s time to take a look at category wise seat matrix or seat distribution in different government medical colleges of Bihar. Please note, this seat matrix will change after implementation of new reservation criteria.

UGMAC NEET Counselling 2024 and Admission Process

Admission in different government and private medical colleges of Bihar is done based on UGMAC counselling. It is conducted by Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB). Counselling for AIIMS Patna would be conducted by MCC of DGHS.

After the publication of NEET 2024 result, BCECEB will invite application for the preparation of state merit list. For taking admission under state quota, candidates must register themselves on the official website of BCECEB. After the publication of state merit list, candidates would be asked to choose medical colleges as per their preference during choice filling and locking.

On successful allotment of a medical college, candidates need to report to designated centres for document verification and admission.
