MCI reduced 160 MBBS Seats in Jharkhand

Recently MCI (Medical Council of India) took a very harsh decision and reduced approx 50 percent of Medical seats in Jharkhand. This decision has badly affected several students who were already allotted Medical seats this year during first and second round of counselling for the MBBS course. After reviewing the infrastructure and facilities in the three Medical Colleges of state MCI reduced 160 MBBS seats in Jharkhand

This decision has shattered many dreams and students are now looking up to the state government for taking precautionary measures. But it seems that now nothing can be done. A team from Jharkhand recently met Dr. Harsh Vardhan (Health Minister of India) and requested him to intervene in this matter but the cabinet health minister did not give encouraging signs. Now Jharkhand government has only one chance i.e. to raise this issue in the court.

Jharkhand state government consumed lots of time in appealing against the decision of Medical Council of India. MCI had also reduced MBBS seats in West Bengal and Bihar this year but both state raised this issue instantly in front of concerned authorities and retained MBBS seats in their Medical colleges. Assembly election is not far away and hence state government will surely want to gain lost MBBS seats.

In its latest decision MCI has reduced 60 MBBS seats in RIMS of Ranchi while 50 MBBS seats each in PMCH and MGM Medical College of Dhanbad and Jamshedpur respectively. After the latest reduction of Medical seats, the three Medical Colleges of Jharkhand have following number of seats available for the MBBS course.

S No.
        Name of Medical College
Available MBBS Seats
(1)
   RIMS (Ranchi)
         90
(2)
   PMCH (Dhanbad)
         50
(3)
   MGM Medical College (Jamshedpur)
         50

                Total
    190

MCI had increased 160 Medical seats in Jharkhand last year but due to poor infrastructure and facilities in the three Medical Colleges of the state, approx 50 percent of Medical seats have been reduced. According to the health minister of Jharkhand 208 Crore and 90 Crore Rupees have already been spent over these Medical Colleges. But it seems facilities in these colleges are still very poor which forced MCI to take this harsh decision.

The academic session for the UG MBBS Courses will begin from September. Now only few days are left in the completion of admission process. After 31st August no Admission in the Medical Colleges will be entertained. Only Court can intervene in this matter and save the future of hundreds of aspiring students who wants to become doctor.

Who is responsible for the reduction of MBBS seats in Jharkhand? In reality both MCI and Jharkhand government are responsible for this. MCI reduced MBBS seats in the state after the initiation of counselling and admission process. Jharkhand government did not raise this issue on time and according to some officials of MCI they kept ignoring warnings of Medical Council of India. The ultimate victims are those innocent students who studied hard and qualified in the AIPMT 2014 but today they are on the verge of losing one more precious year.
