Jharkhand High Court restored 160 Medical Seats in the state
In its historic verdict
Jharkhand High Court has restored 160 Medical Seats in the state which
were earlier reduced by the Medical
Council of India (MCI). Hundreds of students were anxiously waiting for
this decision and now they can take admission into three Medical Colleges of Jharkhand. High Court has ordered state
government to take admission for all 350 Medical Seats in RIMS, PMCH and MGM Medical College. Few weeks back MCI had slashed 160 MBBS Seats in
the state due to poor infrastructure and facilities in various Medical Colleges
of Jharkhand.
MCI had taken this
harsh decision after the completion of first round of counselling when many
students had already taken admission in various Medical Colleges of the state.
Though Jharkhand government gave undertaking to MCI but positive signs did not
come from there. Finally state government and several students appealed in the
Jharkhand High Court against the decision of MCI. In its historic verdict High
Court mentioned following points.
1)
MCI did not call Jharkhand in the
meeting where representatives of other states participated
2)
The undertaking of Jharkhand was not
considered while Medical Seats in the other states were restored after
considering same undertaking
3)
Nobody should be discriminated
Jharkhand High Court also
cited the example of two Medical Colleges of Uttar Pradesh where in spite of
several deficiencies MCI recently agreed to restore Medical Seats after
receiving undertaking from the concerned authorities. This decision of the
court has also relieved thousands of students who will appear in the Medical
entrance exam next year. After the historic verdict of High Court the number of
Medical Seats in RIMS, PMCH and MGM Medical College
are 150, 100 and 100 respectively.
Jharkhand government
must take lesson from this unfortunate incident and should look to upgrade
facilities in the three Medical Colleges of the state. If High Court had not restored
Medical Seats in the state then only 190 MBBS seats would have been available
in the three Medical Colleges of Jharkhand.
