How to Prepare Biology for Class 12 Board Exam?
Biology is a very important subject for Class 12 Board Exam and obviously for NEET. In the board exam, Biology carries 100 marks with 70 marks in theory and 30 marks in practical. In NEET, 100 (90 to be answered) questions are asked from Biology i.e. Botany (50) and Zoology (50). Each question carries 4 marks.
Marks Distribution
Let us take a brief look at marks distribution of various chapters in Biology. As mentioned earlier, the theory paper of Biology carries 70 marks in the board exam.
Units | Marks |
Reproduction | 16 |
Genetics and Evolution | 20 |
Biology in Human Welfare | 12 |
Biotechnology and its Applications | 12 |
Ecology and Environmental Issues | 10 |
Looking at the above mentioned marks distribution it is wise to prepare Reproduction, Biology in Human Welfare and Ecology units first as these are simple and together carry 38 marks in the board exam. You need to learn lots of topics and terms in these units, hence these units should be completed first.
Genetics and Biotechnology are related units. By preparing Genetics properly, one can do well in Biotechnology too.
NCERT Importance
NCERT is the best book for preparing Biology for class 12 board exam. If you read various reference books for board exam preparation neglecting NCERT then it will only lengthen your syllabus. But one can refer to sidebooks to understand various topics. Try to read NCERT Biology book daily and give equal emphasis on revising learned chapters.
Regular revision is essential for securing good marks in Biology. Try to solve objective questions from Biology more and more to attempt 1-mark questions in the board exam.
Recommended Sample Papers
List of recommended sample papers or reference books for class 12 board exams has been given below.
- Trueman's Elementary Biology Vol. II (for reference purposes)
Biology doesn’t involve only learning
Often students complain that in Biology they only need to learn various biological terms which is quite boring. But chapters like Genetics and Biotechnology do not require only learning. You need to understand them well to score better in the exam. If you succeed in understanding different topics of Genetics, then it will become the easiest chapter in Biology. Otherwise, you would find Genetics and Biotechnology very difficult.
How to learn difficult Biology terminology?
The best tip to learn difficult biology terms is to write them on paper many times. By writing you can memorize any biological terms. Suppose you need to learn the genus of a Baculovirus i.e. “Nucleopolyhedrovirus”. Undoubtedly it is a long term, but you can easily learn it by writing it repeatedly on paper.
Importance of Diagrams in Biology
Diagrams are very important in Biology. Even in NEET, many diagram-based questions are asked. Hence you should practice diagrams. There are many questions in Biology like- How Hershey and Chase proved that DNA is the genetic material? Theoretically, it is a long-answer type question, but you can also answer this question by drawing the diagram of the experiment conducted on Bacteriophage by Hershey and Chase. And you will get full marks for it in the board exam.
Sir biology is my favourite subject but I am facing a lot of prob in doing genetics and biotech. These chapters are connected to each other. I am not able to understand and thing. These chap. In total contains 28 marks. My board exams are near. What should I do ?
ReplyDeleteFirst of all learn the first chapter of genetics. It is slightly easy as compared to other chapter of genetics. Learn topics like Mendel's law, recombination, linkage and sex determination.
DeleteAfter completing this chapter you will love genetics.
Regards
1 mark que frm where ??
ReplyDeleteIt can be asked from anywhere from your NCERT biology book
DeleteI read everything few days ago and nw I hv forgotten widin next two day I vl b sitting for boards what can be done?
ReplyDeleteYou haven't forgotten them, it's just the exam fear that is making you believe that. It is very common among students. Solve a sample paper to get rid of this problem and feel confident.
Deletesir i love biology a lot and have been doing well. Can you please give me the most important questions regarding "Genetics" please
ReplyDeleteLaws of inheritance, Linkage, Recombination, Sex Determination, Pedigree analysis, Genetic disorders, DNA as genetic material, replication, transcription, translation, splicing, capping, HGP, DNA fingerprinting, Gene regulation, etc are important topics from genetics
Deleteduring examination what things i should care about writing ans of bio.?
ReplyDeleteNCERT is the best book for preparing bio. While answering bio questions, take care that you are mentioning all important points.
Deletesir, i m in class 12 and i need u to tell me some important diagram that can be asked in exam...
ReplyDeleteEvery diagram in NCERT biology is very very important and you must go through all of them
Deleteare the NCERT questions sufficient and wht ar the imp diagrams
ReplyDeleteYes, they are and every diagram of NCERT is equally important for the board exam
DeleteHello sir
ReplyDeleteI have got a great command over biology but I usually make silly mistakes losing 3-4 marks.
How can I avoid that?
Practice more and more by solving sample papers, questions carrying one marks are often the most trickier one. Solve them to reduce chances of minor mistakes.
DeleteImportant topics from biotechnology
ReplyDeleteRestriction Enzymes, Cloning vectors, Competent host, PCR, Bioreactor, Downstream Processing, Gene Therapy, Molecular Diagnosis, Biopiracy, Transgenic Animals, GE Insulin & Bt are important ones
DeleteIs it necessary to study trueman along with ncert biology. In what time should I complete Section A, B,C, and E ( that is 5 marks questions). Is it necessary to make diagrams even in 2 marks question...... During the preparatory leaves in biology board exam is it sufficient to study ncert thoroughly and then doing sample papers.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely not. If you understand every NCERT point clearly then there is no need to take help of any other sidebook. NCERT biology is the best book, not only for the board exams but also for the medical exams.
DeleteThere is no need for additional diagram for 2 mark question. But if you have time then you can draw it.
Study through NCERT and solve sample papers. It is the best way to prepare for the board exam. When you will solve sample paper, you will get enough idea about time management while solving 2-mark, 3-mark or 5-mark questions.
last 8 years CBSE exams pprs ( AI,DELHI,FOREIGN) AND 4-5 mtp from exam idea is enough to get above 90 in biology .??? or need more study ?
ReplyDeleteplease reply me as soon as possible
To get 90 in Biology, you must have strong command over NCERT. You can solve previous year papers, but cannot solely rely on them to get over 90 in the board exam.
DeleteHii Sir in my coming 12 th class board examination there is around 12 days gap in biology exam? Is it sufficent to prepare biology in these day to score above 95 In board exam
ReplyDeleteI don't think you should leave Biology for the last moment and that too when you want to score more than 95 marks in it. Give at least an hour to Biology daily.
DeleteThank you sir for your wonderful tip i will do my best?? SIR one of my last question is that i am facing very difficulty in gentics what should i do to get rid out of that problem?
ReplyDeleteThe first two chapters in Genetics need to be understood well. I will suggest you to read NCERT properly. Pedigree Analysis checks your concept. Hershey-chase experiment, DNA Replication, Transcription, Splicing, Capping, Translation, DNA Fingerprinting, lac operon, etc are some important topics. Go through them carefully.
DeleteGenetics becomes lot easier when you understand it, instead of mugging. It is very important section, so go through them properly and read NCERT properly.
I'm pretty good at biology and know all the chapters. Even though I attempt all questions I lose a lot of marks in the form of 1/2 and 1 mark from many answers.
ReplyDeleteNot that my answer is wrong but it doesn't seem sufficient to the teacher. I always answer to the point. How can I stop losing marks in 1/2s?
I will recommend you to continue answering to the point. If you succeed in mentioning all the important points, no marks will be deducted in the board exam.
DeleteHi sir...m PCB(12science) and preparing for the upcoming cbse board 2016 but still I didn't know even one chapter clearly as I am unavailable to study and having really very diffulties to study so now I have just one month left.. so in this one month can it be possible to score good marks in the exam or even just pass mark? Can u please tell me how I will study, manage my time to cover all the subjects in this one month . Plzzzzzzz help me.........
ReplyDeleteThank u.
Still you can get pass marks, provided you use this time prudently. I will recommend you to give equal time to all subjects. Leave the difficult chapters and finish easier ones first. Go through previous year papers, it will help you tremendously. Study through notes if you are not able to cover your book entirely.
DeleteThank you very much for ur help sir.
ReplyDeleteSir .... i cant memmorize as idid well in 10 ..... how can i memorize those definitions . ....i dont haveproblem in memorising process or any cycles ...,but definitions and certain questions
ReplyDeleteIn Biology you need to learn several examples, that you cannot avoid. Instead of mugging definitions, you can understand them, you will get full marks if you write all points.
DeleteThank yu sooo much sir
ReplyDeleteSir...biology is my favourite sub....i want to be doctor but i do not like mathematics and physics....so i be doctor yes or no...
ReplyDeleteBiology will help you in passing the medical entrance exams but Physics will help you in securing good ranks in the merit list. So, I will suggest you to give importance to Physics and Chemistry as well as they are very crucial.
DeleteSir what is meant by linkage ?
ReplyDeleteWhen two or more genes are located on the same chromosome, they are inherited together and the genes are said to be linked. Tightly linked genes show low recombination.
DeleteThis page is for solving exam related doubts. Please use our Facebook page for asking questions related to academic.
sir i have completed all topic but i am confuse in ecology which topic is imp for board
ReplyDeleteEcology is an important unit. Go through it once again. Solve previous year papers to get list of important topics. In biology you cannot prepare selected topics as each NCERT line is important. Ecological succession, Ecological Pyramids, etc are some topics which you must go through.
DeleteBiology and human welfare under imp topic
ReplyDeleteAs mentioned earlier, in Biology you cannot prepare selected topics. NCERT should be read line by line. Go through previous year papers to find important topics.
DeleteSir m confused which one should I prefer ncert xam idea or Arihant plz guide me I got 10 days left for my boards exam....
ReplyDeleteNCERT is undoubtedly the best book, not only for the board exams but also for the medical entrance exams.
DeleteDoing only NCERT back questions for all chapters in biology, will help me in scoring good marks in the boards?
ReplyDeleteSurely, it will help. But, to secure even better marks, I will also recommend you to go through reproduction and ecology units thoroughly.
Deletesir I started my 12th cbse classes at 4th april ihave problems in remembering diagrams in chapter reproduction an genetics recently Igot bad marks in my cycle test my teacher discriminated me how to do well in exams sir
ReplyDeleteRead NCERT carefully for understanding diagrams properly. Practice few of them which have been asked in the exams previously, though only selective diagrams are usually asked from these two units
DeleteSir please provide me a right daily time table for my 11th class
DeleteIn Class 11 give special attention to self study. In Biology you need to study 22 chapters. It is better to revise learned chapters regularly. Give at least an hour to each subject daily.
DeleteHi Sir...
ReplyDeleteI am a Class 12 biomaths student and biology is my toughest subject.I score well for other subjects but due to bio , my whole % come down. How much time should i spend for bio in a day??
At least you must give an hour of self study to it daily. Genetics and Biotechnology needs you to understand topics. Reproduction is perhaps the easiest unit. Keep revising the learned chapters regularly to avoid forgetting them.
DeleteThankyou Sir.
Deletesir can you give chapter wise important topic for biology
ReplyDeleteIn Biology, every topic in NCERT is important and questions can be asked from them. You can go through last 10 years question paper to get an idea about frequently asked questions.
DeleteGood evening sir. I'm doing correspondence and not utilised my time well. I asked many of my friends from which book to study some say ncert and some say only reference, ncert doesn't have enough stuff to write for 5 marks long answers. My preliems are a month away and I'm extremely cofused.
ReplyDeleteHello Ekta, NCERT is the first book you should consider while preparing for your exams. You will get full marks for mentioning all important NCERT points in your answer. If required then you can use reference books for clearing your doubts. But, NCERT should never be neglected.
DeleteSir I have my bio exam 3 days later
ReplyDeleteIts just preboard but I need to do as much as possible so that I can focus on phy and chem.
Any tips on which chapter 1st amd which should be done at last
Genetics, Reproduction and Ecology can be done first then look to cover other units. These are easier units and are very important ones. I will suggest you to cover those chapters first with which you are comfortable.
DeleteSir, is it ok to just read ncert textbook and study them in a question and answer pattern from any guides like scanner because i am weak at framing answers and bring all the important points in my answer.
ReplyDeleteIt is more than enough to read NCERT book and practice it by solving sample papers. Once you have full command over NCERT then you can easily incorporate all important points in your answer.
DeleteSir please tell me the important questions for my +2 exam, my exam is near and I cannot study, please tell me important questions, I only want 28 marks in exam
ReplyDeleteIn Biology you should go through last 10 years question papers to get list of important questions.
DeleteSir in biology class 12th doing ncert back questions of all chapters are enough to score 45 out of 70 in CBSE boards
ReplyDeleteYes, it should help you. In Genetics, you should read NCERT book also as it needs you to understand some topics.
DeleteHello sir i have to score 100 in biology firstly i got 30 out of 30 in practical but now in theory tell me some tips for the unpredictable questions
ReplyDeleteIf you want to get 100 in Biology then you should have complete command over NCERT book. You need to focus equally on all chapters.
DeleteSir can I score above 90 as I will be preparing for bio now at the eleventh hour.. ?will I score good if I study very hard in the last days?
ReplyDeleteSecuring 90 in Bio is not a big ask but for this you need to be consistent. If you have studied all chapters earlier then it will be easier for you to go through them quickly, otherwise you should have a realistic target and focus more on your preparation instead of marks.
DeleteHello sir i m facing difficulties and i m a repaetor plzz teell hoow to pass in biology plzz sirrr imp question nd topics i m waiting for ur answer
ReplyDeleteHi Devesh, Passing in Biology is not that hard. I will suggest you to read important units, instead of important chapters. Prepare Reproduction, Ecology and couple of chapters from Genetics and you will easily get close to 40 marks. For important questions, go through last 5 year question papers.
DeleteSir only 2 months are remaining and I have not started preparing biology yet sir please tell me how can I pass in biology with 30 to 35 marks sir only reading ncert textbook is enough without memorising the ncert book and if I do only back exercise of ncert textbook is enough to get passing marks please tell
ReplyDeleteSelect important units which you find easy and read it through NCERT. Memorizing essential stuffs is essential and and you cannot avoid them. How can you solve exercise questions without actually understanding the chapter? Hence, first of all read the chapter.
DeletePlease sir explain how can I score passing marks upto 30 to 35 marks in biology
ReplyDeletePassing mark is only 23. When your target is higher, preparation should also be according to that. Prepare units like reproduction, ecology and genetics first. Read NCERT carefully, you will do well.
DeleteSir I have not able to study properly the whole year because of some health issues and now I have not able to prepare anything in biology please sir only 10 to 15 days are left before the exam can you please help by telling the most important topics from all chapters or previous 5 year papers are enough to get passing marks please help
ReplyDeleteI will recommend you to study Reproduction, Ecology and First chapter of Genetics. These are a bit easier. In chapter 6, learn replication, transcription, Hershey-Chase Experiment, translation, splicing, capping, genetic code and DNA Fingerprinting. Focus on NCERT. Go through previous year papers too, that will help you a lot.
DeleteSir in units reproduction and ecology can you tell important topics which can be completed in these remaining days because preparing these units from ncert will take too much time and only 13 to 15 days are left in exam bio exam is on 13th March please help
DeleteIn Biology, it’s hard to point exact important topics and hence I will not predict that. Anything can be asked from any line of NCERT. Solve previous year papers to find important ones.
DeleteThis is very helpful thank you.
ReplyDeleteActually I don't want to pursue a career in biology but my parents and tutors forced me to take it...I took and I failed in that subject in 11...so my question is .. Can I trust only on Ncert and Pyqs for my results to be good?
ReplyDeleteYes, you should stick to NCERT and Previous year papers. Try to revise learned topics frequently in Biology
