Pattern of CAT 2013

For taking admission into different IIM and Management colleges of India, Common Admission Test (CAT) will be conducted from 16 October to 11 November 2013. In this examination approximately 2 lakh students will appear for 3,335 seats in different IIM. More than 100 Management Institutes of the country will admit students based on the CAT scorecard. Number of seats in IIM has been increased this year. But as compared to previous year, 14,000 less candidates have applied for CAT 2013.

Among all exams conducted after graduation, CAT is believed to be the toughest. Interestingly in this exam aptitude of students are tested and in addition it is also examined whether the students can handle business or not. How students handle problems, techniques to find solutions and their communication skills are tested through exams and during Interview. In CAT exam all qualities for Entrepreneurship are tested.

Why only 1% students get admission…
1)      Syllabus for the exam is not well defined
2)      Questions are not directly asked
3)      Limited available seats, lakhs of applicants
4)      For one seat in IIM, 600 applicants
5)      After exam students are selected for group discussion where one needs to compete with all exam toppers. In personal interview then one competes with toppers of toppers.

Seats increased, but competition is still tough…
As compared to previous year, 115 seats for IIM have been increased this year. But competition is still tough. Because candidates appearing in this exam are either fresher or they are those students who have not only one aim i.e. to crack CAT. These things have been revealed after analyzing registration form of applicants. Number of those students is much lower who used to appear in CAT frequently for trial. Hence it will be a very tough competition this time.

Questions asked in CAT are unstructured. Hence the first problem for the students is to arrange these questions in order. Time management and problem solving ability is vital during examination. Students need to keep themselves updated about the things going around because marks are credited on it.

Two sections of 70-70 Minutes each
There will be two sections in CAT 2013- first quantitative ability and data interpretation and second verbal ability and logical reasoning. Students will get 70-70 Minutes to attempt both sections. Before it a tutorial of 15 minutes will be conducted. If a student completes first section within 70 minutes then also he will not get extra time for the second section. After the completion of one section, one cannot see the questions of that section.

Result of CAT 2013
Result of CAT 2013 will be declared on 14 January 2014.

What to do, when one fails to get admission in IIM
Students should send their scorecard in those colleges where other students with similar score are applying. Many colleges send letters based on own cut-off marks. If you receive many letters at a time then choose that college where you are getting admission in desired specialization.
