Govt to file review petition against SC verdict on NEET

Indian government will very soon file a review petition against the Supreme Court verdict on NEET. The top court of India scrapped NEET (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test) last month on 18 July 2013 telling that Medical Council of India (MCI) has no right to implement common Medical Entrance Exam in the country. The court had also added that MCI notification for NEET violates Articles 19, 25, 26, 29 and 30 of the Indian constitution. According to the top court of India, NEET violates the rights of States and Private Medical Colleges of India.

NEET is a common entrance exam for taking admission into various MBBS and BDS colleges of India. NEET was conducted this year by CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education). MCI had introduced NEET to reduce the burden from the shoulders of Medical students. NEET was implemented to replace various Medical exams like AIPMT, PMT-Mains, BHU, AFMC, all State Medical exams and exams conducted by different Private Medical Colleges of India. NEET was also introduced to check corruption in the Private Medical Colleges during admission.

Some states and many Private Medical Colleges of India were not happy with the arrival of NEET. Hence they appealed against this decision of MCI in the Supreme Court of India. A three-judge bench of Supreme Court dismissed NEET last month and allowed all states and Private Medical Colleges of India to conduct their own entrance exams from the next year. It was a great setback for the Indian government and MCI. Hence government has now decided to file a review petition in Supreme Court on NEET.

While answering a question asked by an MP of Rajya Sabha of Indian Parliament, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad told that according to Indian government it would be in the larger interest of society and students aspiring to become doctor to have NEET. Hence it has been decided to file a review petition against Supreme Court verdict on NEET. Recently an NGO from Delhi also filed a review petition for NEET in the Supreme Court. NEET was introduced to save time, money and reduce pressure from the shoulders of students.  But these ongoing incidents are really not helping their cause. Medical students are really worried about their preparation now. Indian Government and the Supreme Court of India must solve this issue immediately or the preparations of Medical students will be affected.
